The Herbarium of Jean Jules Linden

Jean Jules Linden

Index Herbariorum part II collectors informs that the 'original collections' of J.J. Linden are in BR and GENT. This is only partly correct, since there exists no proper 'first set' of Linden's tropical collections. Linden has sent (for sale*, in exchange of identifications, ...) specimens to many different institutes and specialists; Urban (Symbol. Antill. 3, page 77, 1902) stated that 'Brüssel'** kept 'the rest' and had the intention to send out duplicates. LG is another important herbarium to consult. Because of that distribution practice, labeling by authors should mainly be used to distinguish holotypes from isotypes.

Linden managed the company 'L'Horticole Coloniale' and in the first place collected for horticulture. Much material used for naming or description by Linden only existed as living collections, from which frequently no voucher specimens were made. Even for the famous Coffea robusta Linden, no herbarium vouchers seem to exist (BR only conserves a photograph of a young plant grown by Linden). The discussion of the origin of Gunnera manicata Linden ex André, a species based on Linden material, can serve as a good example of problems caused by this (see Taxon 51: 493-497. 2002).
