Balat Greenhouse

In 1854 the Royal architect of King Leopold II, Alphonse Balat, constructed a small house to grow Victoria amazonica, a large waterlily of tropical America. First it was built in the Brussels Zoo in the Leopold Park. Afterwards it was moved into the ancient Botanic Garden of Brussels. Since 1941, you can admire this beautiful greenhouse in the Garden in Meise. Earlier it was called the Victoria House or the Crowned House; now we call it the Balat Greenhouse. It was an exercise of the architect for the construction of the famous, monumental Royal Greenhouses in Laken.
