General director of the Institute of Nature Conservation since its establishment in 1985 as a scientific Institution of the Flemish Government in Belgium.
Activities and research focus on ecology of waterbirds and wetlands, landscape ecology and conservation, including relations with physical planning.
- Scientific advisor and expert in several national councils, international commissions and organisations, mainly concerning biodiversity research, ornithology, nature conservation, etc. In the European fora a member of working groups or committees of DG VIII, DG XI, DG XII and observer in the Topic Centre on Nature (Paris) of the European Environmental Agency.
- For the Council of Europe (Strasbourg, F.) member of expert groupstional consultant for the Biodiversity Convention, Bern and Bonn Convention.
- Represented in the scientific committees of the EU-Bird and Habitats Directives.
